Our story
MYC Iyengar Yoga Online is an innovative and interactive online Iyengar yoga school. An off shoot of the Marrickville Yoga Centre in Sydney, Australia founded by Hasu Opa Clark and Simon Joannou in 2007. Our online school provides a timetable of 8 LIVE classes every week with highly experienced welcoming teachers from their homes to yours.
Marrickville Yoga Centre is an evolving, dynamic, community based school that has been translated onto the online world. Our online school is a reflection of who we really are, our values around sharing Iyengar yoga, developing and supporting our students. We have consciously created in both schools an open and inclusive space for practitioners to enter, start and maintain their yoga practice.
What do we do?
We teach 8 live online classes of high quality Iyengar Yoga each week. 5 of these classes are General level for students with some yoga experience and 3 are guided led practices for more experienced practitioners focusing on Hips, Backbends and Dynamic Flow. We also teach a monthly Pranayama class and a monthly restorative class (the Emotional Stability Sequence). We also have an extensive library of Beginner classes that are suitable for students who are new to yoga.
Our classes are taught specifically as online classes rather than a combined studio / online class and are therefore designed specifically for online students who are practicing from home.
We offer a large content library which is constantly growing with new content added weekly. Our filtering and search capability enables our students to quickly and easily locate classes they are looking for.
We have specialist classes and workshops with internationally recognised Iyengar Yoga teachers including Gulnaaz Dashti and Stephanie Quirk. These classes are offered both live and as recordings in our library and are for experienced practitioners and as professional development for trainee teachers and certified Iyengar Yoga teachers.
What are we about?
We are committed to interpreting and sharing the work of BKS Iyengar. We practice and share in the method with honesty, creativity and with empathy. We collaborate together with a number of the worlds leading Iyengar yoga teachers to bring online workshops to many around the world for educational and development of the practice.
Who are our team?
We have a committed and dedicated team of teachers:
- Simon Joannou and Hasu Opa Clark who established and teach at the Marrickville Yoga Centre in Sydney, NSW, Australia
- Darrin McNally the principal teacher at Kensington Yoga School and the Croydon Yoga Studio in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia.
- Robyn Lowe a highly respected and regarded teacher from the Marrickville Yoga Centre in Sydney, NSW, Australia.
- Cath Morgan an experienced teacher who joins us from her base in Port Stephens, NSW, Australia.
- Collaborations with internationally recognized senior teachers from time to time including Gulnazz Dashti, Lois Steinberg and Stephanie Quirk.
Our school is personally managed by Stuart Macrow based in the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia.
How are we different to other online Yoga schools?
We have an ongoing engaging relationship with our students. This includes with our personable and approachable teachers during our live online classes. It also extends to our friendly administration from Stuart, which means you are well looked after as part of our community and guided through our school from the very start.
What is Iyengar Yoga?
We bring an innovative, practical, creative and friendly approach to Iyengar Yoga.
Iyengar Yoga offers enormous physical, mental and spiritual benefits. In an increasingly busy world, yoga can act as an antidote to the stress of daily life, and many studies have supported the potential of yoga to decrease physical pain and prevent disease. Improved energy levels, strength and emotional wellbeing are just some of the benefits of Iyengar Yoga.

Testimonials
I am absolutely loving the online yoga experience. I really love how the teachers connect with you on a personal level. The classes are well presented and allow me to completely be in the moment when I perform each of the asanas.

I have been attending the online classes at MYC for some months now. My working schedule often gets in the way of my attendance at class times, so the content library facility is wonderful. I have learnt a lot and continue to learn from every class I attend. I find my personal practice being strongly influenced by what I experience in classes. I appreciate the opportunity to practice with teachers that I may not otherwise get to practice with.

The live online yoga classes have been so valuable in keeping me flexible in every way. I am so grateful for the care, attention, instruction and support of all the teachers. What a great gift you are offering. Thank you sincerely,
Jackie S
This is the place to be! Hasu and Simon have been incredibly generous with their time providing students with so many options for classes. I have been able to maintain my practice, living in a rural part of NSW, by signing in weekly to MYC classes. Also being able to access world renowned Iyengar teachers such as Stephanie Quirk and Gulnaaz Dashti is such a treat to my week. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for supporting my practice of yoga from afar!

I love Marrickville Yoga and it's been wonderful to carry the classes and my new practice during so much change this last year, from the torment of forward bends to the joy of my first unassisted inversions. Each teacher is different, but the set up makes me feel connected and part of a collective. It feels like a perfect place holder, until I can see everyone in person one day in Sydney!

Can I start Yoga with an injury or illness?
For those keen to start yoga who do suffer from serious injury or illness, we do not recommend starting online Yoga classes. If you live locally to Marrickville, we suggest our Yoga Therapy class as an ideal place to start. In a Yoga Therapy class you will have the opportunity to receive one-on-one attention and will be able to get the advice that can help you move forward in yoga. Please see our website for more information on Yoga Therapy.
If you are unsure if you should practice yoga with illness or injuries that you currently have, please consult your GP and email us for guidance.
Do I need prior Yoga experience?
No prior yoga experience is required however, we ask students new to yoga to complete all of our recorded Beginner level classes before attending our General level live online classes.
Our Beginner classes included the following:
- 6-Week Beginner Course with Simon. This is a free course.
- 8-Week Beginner Course with Simon. You need to be a member or purchase a casual passes to access this course.

When doing yoga its important to work carefully with any limitations that you may have eg. injuries, muscular restrictions, illness etc. Many of the standing poses in the free 6-Week Beginner Course can be practiced leaning against a wall and also a chair can be used in front on you if you are experiencing any issues with balance. If you are unsure if you should practice yoga with illness or injuries that you currently have, please consult your GP and email us for guidance.
If you are unsure if the Beginner classes are suitable for you, please email Stuart at online@marrickvilleyoga.com.au.
Do I need any Yoga equipment?
The most important equipment is a non slip Yoga or exercise mat that you can practice on. Other props that would be useful include:
- A bolster or pillows, cushions, blankets / towels that can be made into a shape like a bolster. If you don’t have a bolster, thicker blankets and towels can be rolled together to get the same shape as a bolster. Often an additional folded blanket or a towel is required to place under your head to bring even length on the front and back of your neck.
- Blanket/s – depending on the climate you are in and the room you practice in, you may also like an additional blanket to cover yourself when we relax at the end of the class in Savasana.
- A chair. Ideally the chair will be like a Yoga chair however, most dining room chairs can also be used for supported and seated poses.
- A belt. Ideally the belt will be a Yoga belt however, a standard belt used in trousers or rope can be can also be used in most cases.
We sell some yoga props through our in-studio school Marrickville Yoga Centre. Please email us at info@marrickvilleyoga.com.au if you would like further information. If we don’t have the yoga props you require, we can provide you details for online suppliers we recommend.
